Religion and Its Effects on Society
Many different religions have been established around the world. Undoubtedly, religion has had an impact on societies around the world, in the past present, and future. Religion has a variety of effects of society from health, to affecting how people interact with each other.
According to the authors of, "Who Benefits from Religion?", studies taken suggest that religion may provide a healthier life to those who are faithful. If a person becomes less faithful, then then religion can be harmful. Ellen Idler also supports the idea that religion can have physical and psychological benefits in her article, "Psychological and Physical Benefits of Spiritual/Religious Practices". Gwen Dewar's article says that religion has little to no effect on people because there isn't enough data to prove or disprove religion's health benefits or disadvantages.
Religion also makes an impact in the social invironment as well. Religion can be used as a group to identify with. According to Morgan Oddie, religion is not only a community, but also a tool used to define oneself from others. Religion creates social divisions and can create discrimination. Christopher Hitchen's book, "God is Not Great" asserts the fact that religion corrupts many people throughout history.
Although there are a lot of good and bad effects that religon has on society, it is still to soon to judge if religion is beneficial or not. The world will have to wait until more information of higher quality is gathered.
